Fascinating Archive Of Rarely Seen Photos Capturing Historical Moments Go On Show
A selection of 20th Century photographs from the Hulton Archive was collected for an art show in 2014. These photographs gathered by Getty Images Gallery for a show entitled 'Jewels of the Archives', focused on rarely seen images of famous historical figures and actors.
These 6 pictures were taken in the midst of movement and are snapshots of famous moments in history. From King George V to English suffragist Emmeline Pankhurst, each picture offers its own narrative and give insight into the personality of the subjects themselves.
The Pauper And The King
King George and his carriage are being pursued on foot by a beggar at the Epsom Derby (1920). The carriage moves along as the King and his entourage disregard the pleas of the beggar.
Bond, James Bond
Roger Moore, a famous James Bond actor, is drinking his martini: shaken, not stirred. Something or someone is catching Roger's fancy as he downs his drink.
Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) is shown being arrested during a protest for women's rights outside Buckingham Palace. This demonstration was enacted to dissuade women from fighting for their right to vote.
Record Breaking Mile Run
Roger Bannister famously broke the world record for the mile-long run on May 6, 1954, at Iffley Road, Oxford. This picture was taken an instant before he became the first person to break the four-minute mile as he sets the record at 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.
A Contagious Smile
Gene Kelly, known for his role in 'Singing in the Rain', takes a break from filming in 1966, France. His genuine smile stops passers-by in their tracks as he sits on a bench resting and enjoying the weather.
