Romans adopted and adapted Greek practices of divination, placing importance on augury (interpreting the will of the gods by studying the flight patterns of birds) and haruspicy (examining the entrails of sacrificed animals). These practices were institutionalized within the Roman state religion, guiding political and military decisions. The Romans believed that understanding divine will through these means was essential for maintaining the pax deorum, or peace with the gods.
